Pale Blue Dot – Japanese Aesthetics, Arabic Instrument, European Style – Ambient Musik by Nao Sogabe
In 1990, Voyager 1 took a photo of Earth from a distance of about 6 billion km. In this photo, we can barely make out our Earth as a tiny, pale blue dot.
On this vanishingly small dot, our entire civilization and history unfold. I tried to express this fragile beauty.
Traditional Japanese music, “Gagaku,” has no beat in the sense that most music does. This piece is inspired by Gagaku. Like ocean waves, similar patterns repeat themselves, but without metronomic regularity. Each repetition has its own form, and no two forms are alike. It takes many years of hard work to play every note with the right timing and the right sound. It took me several decades to achieve this.
